James Kalm is a fan of Julian Schnabel. I first saw this piece in 1979 at Mary Boone's when she was downstairs from Leo Castelli at 420 West Broadway. Having just arrived from Idaho to attend the Art Student's League, it was on my first sojourn to SoHo, and got my first taste of what was becoming a new wave of interest in painting, the dreaded Neo-Expressionists. This single painting exhibition is designed to introduce a generation of younger artists to the seminal breakthrough works of Schnabel. During the next month and a half three other paintings will be hung individually for three week stretches.
