James Kalm snaked his way through Midtown traffic to bring viewers a taste of this first ever museum show by Cory Arcangel (Joel Johnson, b. 1978). Arcangel has garnered critical and institutional attention with his interventions (hacking) of classic video games and other commercial and computer programs and devices. As a current standout in the realm of "New Media" he conflates a mischievous wit with technical brilliance to undermine our concepts of straight technology and it's authoritarian corporate culture. While there are references to Pop Art, Conceptual Art and the "ready-made", under this academic veneer, is a vain of whimsical subversion. This show was organized by Christiane Paul the Whitney's Curator of New Media, and includes a walkthrough tour with Arcangel.
