How does a 3 year old Art Event get featured in the New York Times? and in little ol' Reno Nevdada !?!

It's true. This do-it-yourself anarchic art event with the motto "Get a Room, Make a Show" featured 100 artists from all over the west in an unlikely a place and you might guess, Reno Nevada and the…Continue

Is blogging an art form?

I had a guy tell me "stop drawing, blogging is your art". For the record, he wasn't being mean, I think being complimentary–and I would never stop drawing anyway–but it got me thinking a little; Is…Continue

do you do RAINBOWS?

Rainbows pop up in my work sometimes, i fight the urge to let them, I've come to despise them, it's a desire that needs to be curbed. We must fight these demons of light–rainbows–hmmph. next it'll be…Continue

I am...
stoked, just totally stoked to be here, hey is that my jacket you're wearin'?
About my artwork
On a quest to locate my taste. Resigning myself to this search. An impulsive sense (scribbled lines), texture rough/slick, accidents lovin', breakin' stuff, glazing over layers, marbles shiny or plastic. Sparkle & stickers, sometimes pinstriped. Also a bit of the high & artsy. But I like leftovers.

Sometimes it's a representational oil painting or a drawing amongst the scramble. A funny thing about representation is that it could represent one of many things for a witness, regardless of the presenter's vision.

I'm not a literalist, there's no agenda here, well–maybe once in a while. Rather than building a stock notion of meaning or medium and then working that product to its exhaustion, my interests are vague. In viewing my work, I would hope that a transfer of energy might happen: one encounters a piece of artwork and feels a coolness wash over or maybe a fresh gust of openness. whoooooosh

To have one particular taste within myself nailed down to canvas repeatedly would be torture. I say "Here's some of me, all of this. These are what I'm saying now and now and now." It's being dialed in or loosened up, I never know where it's going. So now I've become an installationist, living in display windows, drawing. Nothing means anything without enough perspective. I'll keep going.

On NadaDadaism

Power corrupts, community collapses.

Equality is cooperation. Opportunity is earned.

Let's embrace powerlessness, let's engage community. Let's earn opportunity, with equality. Let's build a powerless commune of opportunistic equals.

There's been an organic development of the event/possee/movement that we're calling NadaDada Motel. In 2007, the first year, it was named Dada Motel by El Jefe. He brought a group of six artists together to put the wheels in motion and… Continue

Life in a Glass Box

Artist in LaBussaBox

My daily life was carried out in the display window of LaBussola Art Boutique downtown on 1st St. for 120 hours last month during Artown–that's 5 days straight–just to draw. I got out Saturday the 19th of July, so I wrote this about the experience:

10 Things I Learned Living Behind Glass:

1. Display windows offer no true alone time; it was a wordless stay but very social.

2. I posses no mood when I'm alone.

3. From the comments in my… Continue

What makes an artist an "outsider"? Is it the self-taught status? Is it the mental instability? Is it a cranky attitude or living in an obscure place? What if an artist has knowledge of current issues & stuff? what if an artist went to college? What if an artist has friends and connections and lacks schizophrenic tendencies?

A knowledgeable art consultant friend once told me, "You're not an outsider but you want us to think that." He's absolutely correct and I recognized that… Continue

I'm constantly being underestimated–you too?

I talk to friends/colleges, family sometimes, I see that maybe they don't think so highly of my potential. That doesn't bother me, I don't see theirs either. No matter how much someone tells you they have this going for them because they're gonna do that... well, let's see it–if they can make things happen, that's great, they're doin' it, otherwise let's see some proof of your potential, and I guess that's when the investors come around, the patrons, the art lovers, when you make it happen and… Continue

I ask me, what do I think about my paintings?

Self, what do I think about my paintings? Where have they come from, where are they going?

So I'll just ramble in my answer, not like anyone's reading this, are they? anyone?

So there's a thing in my work with the scribble. I think I've seen some incredible perfection in scribbles so I've done them in various ways for years, about 10 years. I do realistic forms, heads. Faces I think are one of the hardest things to do in art because we recognize so precisely faces we see. So this… Continue

All together now! –––"Are we not men? We are Nada!"

My number one desire is to make a comfy living from the sale of my art. I made these paintings, but I don't wanna keep them. It'd be nice to make a living from doing the thing I'm best at.

I found out years ago that in order to do this, I must involve others in what I'm doing; inevitably, I concluded, they will involve me in what they're doing too. This is what happened in January of '07 as Jeff Johnson, Tova Ramos, Dianna… Continue

Devine Love

a book Called The Mission of Art by artist Alex Grey. He talks about spiritual manifestations in one's art and divine love is what's behind it all apparently.

Funny I've been looking at an Alchemical symbols book lately and I see the illustrations from half a millennium ago and it's really interesting the way Divine Love plays the very pivotal role.

Light has universal pictorial appeal to illustrate divine love or spiritual awakening 'enlightenment' in religion and… Continue

Beauty and Perception

There can be found experiences in nature and in the daily happenings of routine that we're privy to for just a moment as we ride the train of hours. We might glimpse something as rare and romanticized a thing as beauty, but even if it's a beauty that's only declared by me, it's my beauty.

Style and taste develop, redevelop and in fact can coexist with other, sometimes clashing ideas of taste. If there were truly only one or a tightly limited number of beauty types revealing… Continue

DaMSL (dada motel show list)

I saw a review you did and thought hmmm that was brutally honest..I happen to like people giving both negative and positive feedback as long as when they bash they leave tips or say exactly what they dont like...so I'd like to invite you to look at my art and share your opinion/tips. For you, I loved the pure abstracts. Strong, very appealling use of colors and good comp. I didnt care for your figurative abstracts ie illustrators/soldiers dream...wouldnt say they are bad just not my taste. Look forward to meeting interested/challenging folks here:)
