I am...
Leith O’Malley is a South Australian visual artist.
His work is inspired by Brett Whiteley, Basquiat, Robert Crumb, Shaun Tan and contemporary art & illustration.

He has studied under renowned Australian artist and film maker George Gittoes, who has won the prestigious Blake and Wynne Prize for visual art and has also held the position of official Australian War Artist.

He has continued to exhibit in various group and solo exhibitions and created the promotional artwork for not only the Adelaide Jazz Festival but also the first “Rio-Havana-New York” Jazz & Latin Festival held in Moscow in late 2004.

In April of 2000 Leith was commissioned by New York Festival Productions to provide the promotional artwork for the prestigious Saratoga Jazz Festival. The event featured prominent musicians like George Benson, India Arie, David Sanborn, Al Green, John Scofield and many more.

Clients who have used Leith’s artwork work have included NY Festival Productions, ”Rio-Havana-New York” Jazz Festival (Moscow), Guenette Production Company (Los Angeles) and Le’Mag Magazine (France).

He currently exhibits his work in Adelaide (Artistic Licence Gallery and Chesser St Gallery), South Melbourne (SmartArtz Gallery) and Double Bay Sydney (Frances Keevil Gallery).
About my artwork
It seems to be evolving although I'm sometimes not sure where it is all leading at times.
I like to move between various mediums but have a real fondness for painting in oil. I also like to express parts of my own personality or interests within my paintings although not immediately obvious.
I’m leaning towards a figurative expression of some kind in my recent work and have a sort of 'to thine own self be true' approach to what I do and paint.
I’m also always filling up little art notebooks with doodles, notes or ideas for drawings or paintings. The inspiration behind a lot of my work comes from wanting to express something within myself and usually associated with the things I love (or dislike) about life or have experienced. Some are metaphor, others a little more obvious.
Artists I like
Basquiat, Brett Whiteley, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Gary Shead, Picasso, Andy Warhol, Michael Leunig and more..

Charcoal on Paper..

A recent drawing (diptych) titled "The Question Begs the Answer" is a large charcoal on paper with some original prose by myself (hopefully you can read it ok)..

If not, here it is:

Draw from the ink in your veins

Draw from the carbon in your blood

Draw on the memory of childhood

Draw from charcoal stain and broken pastel.

Draw from pencil and pen.

Draw from reed and quill.

Draw from experience and…

Brett Whiteley and my favourite Arts Video..

I'm a very big fan of the work of Australian Artist Brett Whiteley. This is a snippet from the beginning of "Difficult Pleasure" a tv documentary he made for ABC and a video I have watched many many times over.. Difficult pleasure is how he described painting, or creating art: Art is an argument between what a thing looks like and what it means.

This representation also means I will now have works in galleries in three major cities… Continue
