About my artwork
My current practice references the architecture, space of digital interfaces that we encounter everyday, endeavouring ‘to do technology backwards’ into physical installations. Unlike the ‘cyber’ science fiction genre which envisages our life within, and alongside virtual spaces in a clearly dystopian way; I celebrate these ‘other’ spaces with humour and caution. I am simultaneously fascinated and mistrusting of the intangible and fleeting nature of digital interfaces. I watch the ease at which a yellow folder can morph into an email then swiftly reinvent itself to inform me of what song I am listening to. I can open and close Windows as I choose; moving through the internet and my computer in a rhizomatic nature. There is no linear direction within which to move in – I can dip in and out, returning to any location when I wish. And whilst inhabiting these geographies; there is no physical space that I inhabit. There are no walls that contain me, no objects that I hold within my hand and no paper to touch. Instead, these locations are populated by toy like, caricaturised objects that are simulacrum of the ‘real’.

Indeed, a large amount of interaction online is inconsequential, lacking in physical depth and commitment. There is no blood or rotting bones, and no tumble of bricks after a wall has been knocked down. Jeff Bridges’ character in the Disney film ‘Tron’ comments how “from the other side of the screen it all looks so easy”. Within the film, his character is the first human to enter cyberspace and inhabit the body of an avatar; fighting violent games and navigating his way through the maze of cyberspace. Like myself, Bridge’s character regularly inhabits digital spaces in the ‘real’ world.

Within my practice, I endeavour to pin it down these digital ‘other spaces’, and to make elements of them concrete by applying them to already existing structures or architecture. I attempt to highlight the visually powerful, brightly coloured, cheerful and toy like nature of digital iconography. Entrusting deeply in intangible illusions is not as unfamiliar as we may initially believe. Baudrillard proposes that there is no longer reality in our society, and that the image of the real has overtaken the real itself. He equates this to a religion where people worship icons or images instead of a ‘non existent’ God – a God that has no physical tangibility. He divides these mimicries into four categories. These verge from mirroring a basic reality to pure simulacra – which bears no connection to any reality.
