A Zaha Hadid design for a new office block in Beijing has been counterfeited elsewhere in China. A replica of the Wangjing Soho complex is being built in Chongqi, and construction could be completed before Hadid's own build. Zhang Xin, the developer who commissioned Hadid, quoted by Der Spiegel, was sanguine, 'Everyone says that China is a great copycat country, and that it can copy anything.' His colleague, Satoshi Ohashi, added that the copy would only ever be a rough approximation of the Iraqi-British architect's design. 'It is possible that the Chongqing pirates got hold of some digital files or renderings of the project. [From these] you could work out a similar building if you are technically very capable, but this would only be a rough simulation of the architecture.'
