The twelve Olympic posters designed by British artists for the 2012 games have been revealed. The artists are Martin Creed, Anthea Hamilton, Howard Hodgkin, Chris Ofili, Bridget Riley, Rachel Whiteread, Fiona Banner, Michael Craig-Martin, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, Sarah Morris and Bob and Roberta Smith.
The posters will be recognisable to those familiar with the artists work, such as Bob and Roberta Smith’s familiar hand drawn slogans, this time tackling more aspirational matter commensurate with the Cultural Olympiads ethos. Also Riley’s piece Rose Rose utilizes the artists usual command of colour and line to effect optical sensations of movement.
Each selected from a shortlist of 100 artists, Tate Director Nicholas Serota was delighted at the compelling images produced by the artists he selected in response to the Olympic and Paralympic games. The posters will be available to buy and will be part of a campaign to promote the London 2012 games.
