The artist Franz West has died. The artist, known for his largescale hyper-coloured sculptures that referenced both organic forms and a dream-like surrealist sensibility, exhibited internationally for over thirty years and was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2011 as recognition of his life's work. The Austrian artist had been ill for a while and passed away peacefully in Vienna. The news was announced in a joint notice by the Franz West Foundation, Gagosian Gallery, Galerie Meyer Kainer and Galerie Eva Presenhuber. In that statement the galleries noted that 'Despite his international fame, his humour, generosity and quiet energy never left him. He managed his recent illness with great fortitude and was thinking of projects and working on exhibitions, sculptures and catalogues until a few days ago. The world has lost a great artist who changed the way people looked at art and themselves. His great sense of originality and his generosity with other artists, writers and musicians will be missed by us all.'
