Donna Drapeau. Red rose. Oil Pastel on Photograph Printed on Canvas. 22"x28"
A poet as well as a painter, Donna Drapeau captures both the fleeting immediacy and visceral experiences of poetry in the diversity of her work. Though interacting with an array of subject matter, Drapeau's paintings are largely focused on the subjects of illness and medical treatment. Cinematically moving through explorations of symbolism and representation of an extremely subjective topic, Drapeau ultimately translates her subjects into vivid compositional gestures with a profound sense of tension and relief.
By blurring the realistic qualities of her work, Drapeau is able to portray the dreamlike quality of illness, encouraging the viewer to contextualize her paintings within their own experiences. One key to this effect is the use of oil pastel and Drapeau's immaculate gradients, which add to the shifting light and the depictions of flowers, objects, and forms. Contrasting this is the chromatic pointilism that winds its way through the foreground of Drapeau's work. These stylistic elements appear like tracers or floaters in one's eye, marks of the quirks of the human body and the fragility of human perception.

About the Exhibition
Poignant Moments Trapped in Time: Emerging Transformation
There is something eerily quiet about the artworks included in the NYC exhibition Emerging Transformation. The artists have distorted familiar scenes in careful deliberation to create a distinct, almost uncanny, atmosphere. Sweeping, empty landscapes, emotional portraits, static still lifes, and nonrepresentational abstracts have pared down their elements to the essentials, presenting the world in a still, powerful way. Even energetic scenes forcefully stop time in poignant moments, causing the viewer to stop along with the action and take life slowly, reverently, and deliberately.
