Shubbak: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture, a festival presented by the Mayor of London, sponsored by HSBC, from 4-24 July 2011 is capital’s first ever celebration of contemporary culture from across the Arab world. The festival will feature more than 70 events in over 30 key cultural venues across the London, covering visual arts, film, music, theatre, dance, literature, architecture, lectures and discussion.
As part of Shubbak, The Delfina Foundation will present activities at 29 Catherine Place, SW1E 6DY and at Westfield London.

Shopopolis is an initiative by the Delfina Foundation that explores the notion of shopping centres as social spaces through reciprocal residencies and workshops in the UAE and the UK.
From May 2011, public works - a London-based collective of artists and architects - and Khalid Mezaina and Karima al Shomely have been researching how shopping centres - from Arab souks to British street markets, from Dubai Mall to Westfield London Shopping Centre - serve as alternative communal spaces and critical points of exchange. Engaging with shoppers and shopkeepers, the artists aim to collect personal narratives and document micro-communities and invisible 'networks' that exist in the mall. These narratives will be re-imagined as short animations and used as the conceptual design for unusual, yet practical 'products'.
Like the narratives that inspired them, each of these newly-designed products will complement each other; and together, set the stage for a communal feast: a table, chairs, cutlery, food. The resultant exhibition will feature an installation of the innovative products, video documentation of the feast with Shopopolis' participants, and short animations of the stories that inspired the products in The Village's main display window at Westfield London from 16 to 23 July.
From 20 to 28 June, the artists will work on-site at Westfield London in the Mobile Porch, a unit designed by public works. Specific timings for (inter)activities will be posted on our website soon.
Shopopolis is produced by the Delfina Foundation's artist-in-residence programme in partnership with the Emirates Foundation, Westfield London, British Council, and Tashkeel.
