About my artwork
As a painter, I work in diverse media - celebrating transience, inadequacy and the contradictions of a commodified world. My subject is the ambivalence of experience – terror and wonderment in a human heart. My aesthetic is that of the humble postcard. My work, scribbled messages both platitudinous and profound, snatched from the frontline of the prosaic – “Weather still changeable, wish you were here”. Irony is key in an oeuvre which explores the interface between raw, felt experience and a mediated world of shrink-wrapped ideas and bite-sized epistemologies. If collage is the lingua franca of post modernism, it is also my Franglais. In a world without answers, my work neither seeks completion nor finds resolution. This is a contemporary collage where you can still “see the joins” and it is essential that you do so. That is where the art is. You are invited into a landscape stolen from Heidegger’s “World As Exhibition” where juxtaposed images combine to form alluring, imaginary worlds, which you may enter at your peril.
Artists I like
Would probably best wish I didn't name them.....Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio,William Hogarth, Claude Lorrain, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, J.W. Waterhouse, Edvard Munch, Paul Cezanne, Chaim Soutine, Pablo Picasso, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Yves Klein, Josef Beuys, RB Kitaj, Sigmar Polke, Francesco Clemente, Enrico Baj, JM Basquiat, Sean Hillen, Julian Schnabel, Don Van Vliet, John Baldessari, Jake & Dino Chapman, Sandy Skoglund, Jeff Wall

Hello Mike - Thanks for the invitation, I am delighted to accept. I notice that you've been in the music industry so you're more than familiar with censorship by neglect. We'll no doubt speak again.

Take Care.

Regards Lee

Probably yes, Shay. But we can still bitch and moan about what's not right in the interim and try to make honest art about the substance of our lives. If nothing else it passes the time. The isolation you feel may not be unique to you but a universal condition, so don't think you are alone in all this. Just so few actually see what's what. There's always been a market for unquestioning, non confrontational aesthetically pleasing images. What needs critiquing is their social function and their relationship with oppression in societies. So don't get down, get bitching.

Mike—I joined because I wanted to post a critical comment, in response to a congrats article on Art Review about Zhukova winning the Leo curators award. Its really disgusting seeing the art establishment sucking up to Kremlin-compliant Russian oligarch billionaires. Much of the art world is utterly shameless. But my 2-day campaign against this award has thus far rendered zero responses from the ICI, Art News, Art Review, Curators NY, even opposition movements in Russia are utterly unmoved by my campaign. I've never felt so isolated. Leo Castelli's widow is also utterly indifferent. What is it about the business about putting aestheticly pleasing pictures on people's walls that it attracts so many money grubbing leeches, who are utterly shameless as to the source of money? As a species we are doomed!

..................... At last I think it's finally finished. I started this series in 2004 and now there are over 100 images. I'm almost hoping no more will follow - They take forever to make and worse yet, I'd have to remake the show reel to include new material!

Way back when I started this series I knew that I wanted an “open” narrative, so that the imagination of the viewer could find a meaning in each image. I am interested in the process by which the practice… Continue
