If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
a Belgian painter
About my artwork
Hans Defer paints a fragmented world that is balancing on the border between abstraction and figuration, a world that is built from assembling elements from collective memory and images from populair culture,
His paintings are unstable images on the verge of disintegration,
Using references from sources as diverse as Google, Youtube, film, books and magazines and his own close vicinity, the artist creates a visual archive that reflects his obsessions with white noise in communication, the debris of the modern visual culture that is left behind on the cutting room floor,
Each photograph he takes from these sources is photographed again to create a reproduction from a reproduction, This way, a distance is created between the painting and reality, a distance that is further emphasised by the experimental framing that leaves out crucial elements in the composition,
Each drawing, each painting is an exercise in the perfect disappearance, It is the aim from the artist to remove all autobiographical references,
The main themes in the work of Hans Defer are communication, psychology and autism,
Artists I like
Luc Tuymans, Francis Bacon, Marlene Dumas, Otto Dix, Giacometti, etc...
