About my artwork
The work originates from the idea of the overlooked.
Derelict buildings and spaces fascinate her. In the work she references Bruitalist architecture and in particular the conformity of government tower block housing.
She explore buildings, specifically homes and how memories and evidence can be found in the walls and is very interested in the processes we go through to suppress memories and experiences.
She work on the idea that memories can be buried within the walls of structures, therefore in theory our memories and experiences can live on in a building long after we have left.
The layering effect throughout the work closely relates to this theory. Each layer represents a memory or an experience being suppressed with the weight of cement.
The material of cement has been chosen due to her fascination for Bruitalist tower blocks and for the sheer weight and supposed dull quality it holds. The theory that this material absorbs and holds light as well as reflecting it is its main advantage, and this allows the material to store an experience or memory within it.
