I am...
Tiiu Rebane (Fonarik) was born in Tallinn. She studied in Tallinn Nõmme Gymnasium.
After that she took classes in photography (1992) and entered Pärnu Sütevaka artclass (1993-1994).
In 1995 she took part at estonian artists exhibition in Moscow with a monumental installation
"The End" (room covered with xerox-copies of hand holding a cigarette). Between 1995-1999 Tiiu Rebane studied painting in Estonian Academy of Arts.
She made series of serious works that attracted attention. Among them were "endless rotating"
kinetic objects "Commoon"(1996) and "F(x,y,z)"(1997). Paintings "Trinity", "Man and Woman" or
"Terra Incognita" were all done as schooltasks but stayed standalone artworks that solved many
problems in painting medium with their strong roomconcept and idea. First solo exhibition "Room.Nowadays Myth."
was in 1998. Next year she made 4 part diploma mixing paintings with photos of her life.
Also that year, she made a videofilm "Epoch!" with Karl Nagel and presented it in a cinemahouse.
Exhibition "Realism" (2001) showed her first paintings series called "Questions to bourgeoisie".
She connected them with installations, selfmade coffin and chairs with headboxes. Between 1999-2001
she studied Literary Theory and Semiotics in Humanitarian Institute.
Followed exhibitions: "True Story",2002 ("Questions to bourgeoisie II"), also other small painting series
"13-th apostle"; "Surrend",2003 ("Questions to bourgeoisie III") and "Notes",2005. Last of them
was more of an installation exhibition, consisting words (3x "Long live" and "IS") made from
wooden letters that were overpainted with grotesque alike hands, plus two red crosses what
consisted paintings ("Questions to bourgeoisie IV"). Year 2007 exhibition was in Tallinns main
gallery Vaal and called "Execution". "Subject to Subject", "Impossible to Exploit o La La Absurdista"
and "Sex or death" were some names of the paintings. Since then Tiiu Rebane has been working with
conceptual photo, collages and building up a web-based environments for future projects with other
galleries and artcommunities. In 2008 Tiiu Rebane lives and works in Tallinn with artist Karl Nagel
raising their 3 year old daughter.

I think your work is full of visual intelligence. You have a very productive mind and many skills. It is difficult for artists internationally to know what to do with our talents.

I am much older than you but only now do I feel I am finding my direction. It is sometimes more difficult if you can do many things.

I hope we can stay in touch and help each other. ROB
