If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
I am...
fascinated by Japanese art, particularly Rinpa screen painting of the Edo period and ukiyo-e and senso-e woodblock prints of the Meiji period.
About my artwork
Currently I am working with color diptychs of vertical images shot with 645 medium format film cameras. For landscapes I generally shoot 2 negatives side-by-side. For architectural subjects I often get more creative capturing two images that are not simply adjacent. In either case I am printing both negatives optically on one sheet of conventional color paper.
Artists I like
Peter T. Brown, Stephen Shore, Tawaraya Sotatsu, Hasegawa Tohaku, Sakai Hōitsu, Ogata Korin, Ogata Kenzan, Kobayashi Kiyochika, Toshihide, Toshikata, Hishida Shunsō, Hosoe Eiko, Hiroshi Sugimoto.

The photos are all from the Downeast Coast region of the American state of Maine. The format is partially inspired by Japanese screen painting and multi-panel woodblock prints that were popular in the Meiji Period. I use 645 medium format film cameras to make two adjacent negatives that I then print on one sheet of paper. I then scanned the… Continue
