I am...
a 2011 graduate in Fine Art who works as an Artist in Residence in Yorkshire.
About my artwork
The core of my practice revolves around the theme of recurrence.
Geology inspires the analysis of the landscape where we occupy a harmoniously destructive and reconstructive world.

The landscape viewed in the context of geology is inescapable in Wales, my home. Eroded slate Mountains once the size of the Himalayas in the North, ghosts of coal industries scatter the South and wrapped in 750 miles of coastline. The elements carved this land, exposing the subterranean. Rivers carve, glaciated valleys aplenty and the old Welsh industries, often driven by coal, slate or ore extraction, saturate the Welsh landscape. The beginnings of the practice are in paint.

The way in which I paint is mimetic of geological processes; erosion, saturation, crystallisation, alluvial fans etc. The paintings are also a vehicle for inspiration where drawing, intricate hand-cut reliefs and scientific maps extend the geological fascination.

Ultimately, can the work communicate both the intricacy of the atom and the sublime of a cosmos?

Artist in Residence 2011-2013
The residency at Ackworth School has introduced the use of local maps from the 1800s, a geology map of Britain from 1908 along with many discarded geography books from the Geography Department. Coal Mining became an obvious relationship between Caerphilly, where I have come from, to West Yorkshire, where I currently live. Mapping and contouring the drawings and paintings were a result. Creating contour models and relief works enables me to revisit the problem of communicating the subterranean landscape.

Philip Cheater at Blank Media Collective, Manchester

Manchester based Blank Media Collective is a fascinating building.

The  architecture alone is fascinating, but the opening of the "Inside" show did not fail to surprise.

The premise of the show was to evoke the subconscious through a disturbing, enveloping or engaging environment. Many of the artworks did this, but no more so than Philip Cheater's. He…

So I went to the Supersaurus opening last night in Swansea and was greeted by the loveliest people that live in Swansea, Fern Thomas and Owen Griffiths. You always see them around Swansea and are always encouraging art…

There seems to be a lot of life in your murky, muted images; mysterious and surprising. I like them. Thanks for sharing.
