If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
A graduate of the Government College of Art, Calcutta. For last three decades he has been noticeably participating in important group and prestigious anthological exhibitions. He had his first solo exhibition in Calcutta, in 1987. He has had solo show in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Solingen, Germany.
Born, bred and brought up in Calcutta, Sekhar's paintings have always displayed proneness towards visualization of human situation in chaotic geometry of a decaying metropolis, pierced by harshly beating sunlight coming through haze of smog-filled grime. His recent paintings are peopled with vacantly gazing, placid faced lonely young people, which have piercing light and shadow absorbing non-living interiors, caught up in heavy solid cages of urban geometry, with possibilities both of going up and coming down ubiquitous stairs. His essentially duo tonic palette creates, alternately, moods of despair and hope. Sekhar is a socially motivated painter in the grand tradition of many Bengal painters of the past, but he has not picked up either their descriptive nor their narrative propensities.
