Richard Brooks was born in 1965 near Manchester. He now lives in Suffolk, with his wife.
Schooled in St Albans where he achieved three A levels [ranging from Maths to Religious Studies] in 1983 before going onto higher education where he studied Accountancy, achieving the foundation certificate in 1984.
He continued his accountancy training whilst working in accountancy practice, qualifying as a Certified Accountant in 1990. In 1991 he entered the public sector in a Local Authority, first as an accountant [until 1998] and then as an internal auditor [until 2003]. The research and evidential nature of this work has given Richard valuable experience and skills which he has transferred to his art practice.
Whilst still in Local Government employment Richard [in 1999] returned to higher education, studying at the Queens Foundation, Birmingham, part time, obtaining the Certificate in Applied Theological Studies in 2002. This diligent enquiry has again helped to equip Richard as he rigorously explores and critiques issues of concern in his art.
Richard became increasingly interested in photography and in 2007 returned to education full time at Sutton Coldfield College where he achieved City and Guilds [level 3] Distinction in Photography in 2008. Later that year Richard continued his studies at the University of Derby and has now just completed reading BA (Hons) Photography [Fine Art].
In 2008 Richard had two works accepted for the Derby City open, and the following year he had a further work accepted. Richard had another work accepted for the Coventry Open 2010. In June 2010 he had his first solo exhibition, "Damaged" at Derby Cathedral. Richard recently had a video installation piece in the Wirksworth Arts Festival.
Richard continued developing his art practice and exploring strategies for continuing making work, engaging in further formation as an Artist as he undertook MA Fine Art at NUA [2011 to 2013], where he gained a distinction and his work was selected for axisweb MAstars 2013 by Amanda Geitner [ www.axisweb.org/features/profile/mastars/richard-brooks/ ].
