I am...
I am a Colombian artist. I have lived most of my life outside my home country in places as diverse as Thailand, Argentina, and Poland. Since 8 years I live and work in The Hague in The Netherlands.
About my artwork
Paper and drawing are my passions. Not drawings upon paper, but lines themselves being made of paper: see-through structures made up of lines in space, allowing light to filter through and shadows to emerge.

Line drawing is always associated with something slender and scratched on paper. How then to make lines consisting of paper, drawings without support that can hold themselves up and at the same time retain the freshness of a line sketched on paper? These are the questions I made myself during the course of my work, while seeking new paths to extend the possibilities of drawing into the third dimension.

I work with language and use written texts as visual objects. What interests me is the duality that is created when the actual words are transformed into paper. In a way, the holes created between the letters become significant, reflecting not only the presence of a support no longer visible but also other nuances of communication, such as pauses and silences. Visually, I play with different kinds of spaces and colors to make emphasis on specific words, leaving some readable, while others retain their calligraphic shape but are no longer legible. My calligraphic work, deprived of their support and affected by color variations, allow me to play with other types of readings that arise spontaneously, since some of the words are highlighted and others are effaced.

I also work within the concept of exile. I explore the confrontation with new cultures and dialects, of how a foreigner confronts this unfamiliar communication, how they create connections in a new world where there is a lack of belonging. Who are they outside of their home country?
The silence forced by the absence of dominance of a language that enables communication. Being dumb, incapable of speech. Not recognized, acknowledged or seen by others, invisible to this world. It is these issues of loneliness, or marginalization, that I seek to explore actively in my work.
