Michael Bowdidge

During my career I have explored the use of various media, having initially worked with small scale sculptural assemblage before becoming increasingly fascinated by the possibilities of digital cameras and Photoshop in the 1990s. The last seven years have seen a return to my sculptural practice, although I now work at a much wider range of scales than in my earlier work. I have also sought to retain the taste for simplicity and immediacy that I gained from working with digital imaging technology in these new assemblages and installations.

Most of the sound pieces on this page also sprung from the same desire to re-arrange materials which are 'close at hand' that drives my sculpture, although in this case the materials were the various standard 'alert' sounds supplied with Windows XP.

“Surveyable by a re-arrangement”: notes towards a grammatical understanding of assemblage sculpture - Michael Bowdidge

Sculptural assemblage can be understood in terms of a displacement and reinvention of objects that is achieved through strategies of juxtapositioning and inversion. Seitz (1961) defines assemblage as follows

“1. They are predominantly assembled rather than painted, drawn, modelled or carved. 2. Entirely or in part, their constituent elements are preformed natural or manufactured materials, objects or fragments not intended as art materials.” (Seitz 1961: 6).
