I am...
Marko Jezernik

1950 Place of birth: Celje, Slovenia

1963 – 1976 I have started with activities on art topics already in grammar school, when I have sculptured my first sculptures in wood and metal. During my years of study I have started to draw and paint. In the year 1980 I have moved to Šentjur where I actually begin to be creative.

1980 – 1984 For 4 years I became a regular guest in the studio of a painter Goce Kalajdžiski, who showed me and skilled me in a different painting and sculpturing technics. I became familiar with technic of watercolour, which I am using at most and I am still developing it. In the time of my presence in a studio of my mentor, I have prepared also my first exhibitions.

Among the important exhibitions I want to mention following:

1988 Smelt Ljubljana, Slovenija

1992 » Le Faux Miroir« Art Gallery, Grand Sablon-Brussels, Belgium / invitation of the galleriest mister Marc Pleitinx /

1993 Paviljon NOB Tržič- Museum of Contemporary History Tržič, Slovenia;
Križanke, 41. International Summer Festival, Ljubljana, Slovenia / positive evaluation of artworks from cycles » El Torro« and watercolours has given also art historian prof. dr. Mirko Juteršek

1998 Avditorij Portorož, Slovenia – unique art glass

1995- 1998 During the time I was employed in a glass firm Steklar in Celje I have an opportunity to be acquainted with the modeling of glass / fused glass /. In the glass studio of Ciril Zobec in 1997 in Rogaška Slatina I have the chance to meet for the first time with the tecnic of glass fusing. From that moment on I have started to express my ideas also in glass.

1998 I made a decision to start being active only on the field of art. In the summer I have started to work in Portorož, Slovenia.

2002-2003 Two years I had a studio in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, where I have painted, sculptured and created in glass.

2003 I have moved to Piran, Slovenia. Piran becomes my living room.

2004 I have started to work in my new studio and gallery in Savudrijska Street, Piran.

2006 Studio and gallery was moved to Bolniška Street, Piran. GALLERY MARKO JEZERNIK
About my artwork
In the year 1983, after several years of drawing and painting only for himself, Marko Jezernik finally showed his art to public. Since then he has had more than thirty one-man and two group exhibitions: in Šentjur, Celje, Ljubljana, Videm, Belgrade, Radovljica, Rogaška Slatina, Rijeka, Radenci, Portorož, Kamnik and Bruxelles ( 1992 ).
Acording to Drago Medved, Marko Jezernik's primary interest throughout this time has been water-colour, although he continued to draw. He has also produced some graphic works. After all this years of creativity , water-colour stands out as the artist's prefered technique. As a technique and a method of fine-art contemplation it corresponds most closely to the artist's character traits, that is, his child-like curiosity, lirical sensitivity and firm emphasis in just the right places.
His compositions are simple; an imaginary line of reflection separates the upper from the lower part of the painting and is introduced by the motif itself: a lake, its surface, the horizon... The artist taps from nature a harmony which also endows him with poetic licence, and permits independent excursions into unknown and the mysterious.
This tendency is seconded by his use of colours. In his compositions the yellow bursts forward in a moment of relaxation amidst the predominantly cold colours, especially blue and subdued green, and the many shades of grey.
Jezernik's paintings are an impresionistic recording of his world view, which is passionate and rational at the same time. For this reason, according to the critic Drago Medved, water-colour is likely to remain Jezernik's favourite technique for quite some time, perhaps forever!

From the catalogue of 41st INTERNATIONAL SUMMER FESTIVAL, KRIŽANKE, Ljubljana 1993

Marko Jezernik is an exceptionally complete personality and talented artist. His life philisophy is dealing with harmonisation of his native Slovene culture and joyfully creative artistic nature. His water-colours are poetic evolution, where a few theme-colours become a new value.

What exhibitions are good at the moment?
Repyartrium Tunnel Parenzana
Exhibition 18. – 20. June 2010, Portorož Slovenia

My friend, painter Repy Repija come to an intriguing idea to prepare an exhibition in a 550m long tunnel of ex-Narrow Gauge Railway Parenzana , leading from Trieste, Italy across a coastal part of Slovenia to Poreč, Croatia. 550 m long tunnel Valeta is situated in Slovenia and connects Strunjan and Portorož.

The Narrow Gauge Railway Parenzana was aborted before II.WW, but most of the tunnels and buildings along the ex-Parenzana railway line are now in use on a different way.

More information for Narrow Gauge Railway Parenzana you can find on following link:

Glass Impression – AIHV 19, 2012 Piran

Years ago, I think it was in 1992 or 1993, I have been several times in the Austrian Bärnbach with my friend Aleš Stopar, who works in THE CELJE REGIONAL MUSEUM (PMC). We have been visiting glass exhibitions in the Glass Museum, which is still leaded by Mr. Hans Martin Hittaller. On one of the first exhibitions, Aleš introduced me to Zvonka Požun, who came from Celje to Bärnbach and remain there to this day.…
