If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Margarita was born on January 26th, 1982 in Rovno (Ukraine). In 1987 she moved to Brest (Belarus) with her family, where Margarita studied violin and Spanish. In 2000, at age 18, she moved to Barcelona (Spain) where she has lived since.
It was in Barcelona, in August 2003, where she met the Spanish sculptor, Carlos Matas. They started working together in 2004. A few months later, the professional relationship would be entwined and enhanced by a personal relationship.
In 2006 they had a son, named Carlos.
Life with Carlos Mata was very intense, both personally and professionally. Among the projects they developed together, there were many sculpture and jewellery exhibitions in several countries.
A diagnosis of cancer and its consequences –complicated surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy- didn’t stop Carlos: they tried to keep up with the rhythm of the atelier until two days before Carlos went into hospital for the last time.
Carlos died on July 22nd, 2008 and left an enormous hole in Margarita’s life. After losing him, loneliness, sadness, pain, and incomprehension enveloped her. Only art could heal her emptiness and loss. In December 2008 Margarita started painting. By the end of June 2009 she was composing music. She wrote 33 poems dedicated to the sculptor which, together with some of the oil paintings she created during this period, became part of her first book of poetry and painting: Le Roman du Café, published in February 2010.
“Why choose a title in French?” –Margarita wonders. “Maybe because it was the second language after Spanish we used in the atelier and at home, and also because the word “Le Roman” in French has a wider meaning, closer to the one it has in Russian… In Spanish I would have to use more than one word to express all I would like to say”.
“If I think about it, after a very intense and creative year, I have managed to add some sense to all I have experienced and lived. And all thanks to art. I have started painting, writing, and… after 12 years of silence, I have started composing.”
“Currently I have a few songs in Spanish, Russian and English, and a classical piece for two violins and guitar (for now) that will hopefully be published in the future. I hope the same will be true of the poems that I have written. They are poems in Spanish covering over 80 themes. Among these poems, “El Olvidar” was semi-finalist in a poetry contest celebrated in the “Centro de Estudios Poéticos” in Madrid and it will be published this spring as part of the “Caminos inciertos” anthology. I have also published a book including poetry and paintings. I have since completed 30 more oil paintings and I am working on about 10 more. I also expect a painting exhibition to happen soon!” -Margarita declared in February 2010.
