If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?

I am...
a Colombian-American artist living in New York. I create mixed media works that merge the anatomical and botanical world highlighting the interconnectedness and fragility in both human and nature.

My studies include: Bachelor of Arts from Wells College with Honors in Studio Art and a Master of Science in Art Education from Queens College. I have been awarded fellowships, including the EAF: 2010 from Socrates Sculpture Park, Urban Artists Initiative/NYC and the 2013 Wave Hill Winter Space award. I've received funding awards from the Association of Hispanic Arts AHA, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council-MCAF and the Queens Council for the Arts for the creation of my Public works. I've had solo exhibits at The Sage Colleges: Opalka Gallery, Albany, and the Gathering of the Tribes, New York, NY and have exhibited at venues including El Museo del Barrio, Lehman College Gallery, Socrates Sculpture Park, and Praxis Gallery in New York; The Kawasaki City Museum in Japan and The Hampden Gallery at the University of Massachusetts.
About my artwork
Inspired by the physical commonalities between Nature and the human body, I create hybrid anatomical and botanical forms that attempt to point at the interconnectedness and fragility in both nature and body as one. In my work, I observe the body’s interior and exterior, as a natural system, landscape or small universe, while searching out the sublime and possibility of wonder. Some of my works are contained by suitcases, bell jars and dresses, just as the body is by its skin. Others as in The Botanico Series spread out through the floor and walls, as uncontrolled nature does when reclaiming abandoned, urban spaces. My work and in particular this last series, also explores the idea of weeds and wild flora, as the unwanted nature in constant and mutual resistance with the cultivated, human-controlled nature; which in addition raises questions of reality vs. artificiality.

I create from site-specific to sculpture, using a wide array of hard and soft materials including, clay, found objects, wood, foam, fabric, craft and recycled items, and live and artificial plants. The qualities of color, texture, form, weight and memory, already present in the materials, are key in informing my creative process.
