If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Digital, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking
I am...
Kane Cunningham an artist living in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
About my artwork
My work considers issues related to the tradition of landscape painting. I believe the landscape painter has a voice in which to express issues related to history, politics and cultural change.
This is important ground in which the artist can express concerns that effect the wider community. The landscape painter is important and should be positioned as such within the wider world of contemporary practice. It is not simply about painting a few trees or a dry stone wall, which in its self is symbol of class division and start of the industrial revolution through the enclosures act.
Artists I like
Picasso, Turner, John Piper, John Hoyland, Waterhouse , Peter Lanyon and Ben Nicholson
Travel, mountain walking and history
What exhibitions are good at the moment?
Good stuff on in Berlin at the moment, worth a visit.

‘I’ve bought a house that will be the next one to fall over the cliff. It feels like I have no… Continue

Venice sounds marvelous - though I don't think you'd find me jumping off a bridge, whatever the weather!

I've not spotted Mr Hockney here yet, though I expect he'll be around at some point.

Actually I've spent most of the last five weeks writing my end of year report for ACE - more of a job than I expected. Now I have to write the next application before a meeting early next month - not quite how I planned spending the summer!

I should probably take a day off - maybe I should go to Heanor with a sketchbook tomorrow, after todays news, eh?

Hello Kane - How did your latest show go last week? Sorry I couldn't make it - I've been at the computer for the last ten days or so writing my end of year report for the Arts Council - I probably have another week of it too!
Hope all is well?
Cheers, Mik

Wotcha Kane!

Been in Portugal mate - blue skies and blazing sunshine: nice and warm, even got a bit of colour on my face - 'twas a bit of a shock to come home on Saturday night, I can tell you.

I did some painting out there - probably my first on-site plein aire watercolours. And a very interesting experience it was too - even if the results are a bit cruddy - it helped me think through the process, and about possible directions for me to work on. Early days though - I've spent an awful lot of years painting in a studio, so changing is very challenging. I'll send some photos later.

I think I'm going to have to come and visit fairly soon too, if you're still up for it: I've got more watercolour painting kit sorted now, and hopefully more time - though that never seems to quite materialise.

I'm glad you had a good painting session on the beach - and yes, I think I'll always remember those days we had in Whitby's Black Horse!

Catch you soon.
Cheers, Mik

Jeepers! I don't know how you do it - you could die of exposure painting out there - don't your fingers freeze up?
