About my artwork
I try to build a dialogue between the illusionistic spaces inherent within painting and the experience of navigating real space around an object.
Often relating directly to the size and space of a human, sculptural art objects are made using painting materials. Canvas is stretched over wooden structures and layers of oil, acrylic and gloss paints are built up and exploited for their material qualities.
Fluid painting techniques are combined with a sculptural awareness of space, site and weight, manifesting an austere yet painterly language in which autonomous objects are given energy and life.
The properties of paint are married with the structure of a piece, through allowing the pigment to take its own course over the surface: the unpredictability of this creates a tension with the controlled making process that has previously taken place. In doing so the possibility of failure becomes imminent as I push this process as far as I can.
