Drawing, Event, Painting, Performance, Sculpture
Jessica Alfonso was born a fraternal twin, February 16th, 1977 in Montreal, growing up in the Laurentians. Her true name is 'Diaz' and is in actuality, the name of her Cuban grandfather (Boulivar Diaz) who, upon fleeing Cuba during the 1930's, purchased the papers of a man named Tony Alfonso. Her ethnicity combines both a Cuban and Irish heritage.
The artist’s creativity was cultivated by her father’s skilled guidance from an early age. She has garnered artistic awards, winning the Barbara Foreman Art Award in 1987-88, and L.R.H.S art award in 1994. A graduate from Concordia University (2000), and she is also a former member of the Concordia Art Collective. Her work can also be found in numerous private collections, across Canada and in Europe.

About my artwork
A sense of immediacy and emotional resonance are elemental within Jessica’s work enjoys evoking the modern mythical (un)consciousness. An ethnicity that combines Cuban and Irish heritage contributes to this sensibility of seeking to subvert notions of what is seen and digested in popular culture, with the sacred, prophetically inclined and the numinous. This creates a tension of sorts, as iconic symbols are implemented to question, and seek into narratives that flow within contemporary perception.
Visionary art, the Erotic, Symbolism, and esoteric explorations are fundamentally vital to how I conceptualize most of the work that I create.
Not all my work has been photographed. There is one from 2008 in particular (The Watchtower); and copious amounts of drawings from years of work when I was a child that have not been documented professionally.
Working again. Have not been active in 12 years. Will complete a series of 5 large pieces which are largely symbolic in nature. They are also the largest I have ever worked. I usually work quite large. More recently, I had a very fluid set of images which has produced these ideas, which are now being made. I am quite grateful for this inspiration, and am applying myself accordingly with great respect for it. I know it is unprecedented and powerful.
***There will be 9 new works in total. They are representational, narrative & symbolic in nature. Themes of transformation, dualities, and hidden/expressed power are explored.***
