I am...
Jessica Alfonso was born a fraternal twin, in 1977 in Montreal, growing up in the Laurentians. Her true name is 'Diaz' and is in actuality, the name of her Cuban grandfather (Boulivar Diaz) who, upon fleeing Cuba during the 1930's, purchased the papers of a man named Tony Alfonso. Her ethnicity combines both a Cuban and Irish heritage.

The artist’s creativity was cultivated by her father’s skilled guidance from an early age. She has garnered artistic awards, winning the Barbara Foreman Art Award in 1987-88, and L.R.H.S art award in 1994. A graduate from Concordia University (2000), and she is also a former member of the Concordia Art Collective. Her work can also be found in numerous private collections, across Canada and in Europe.

About my artwork
A sense of immediacy and emotional resonance are elemental within Jessica’s work enjoys evoking the modern mythical (un)consciousness. An ethnicity that combines Cuban and Irish heritage contributes to this sensibility of seeking to subvert notions of what is seen and digested in popular culture, with the sacred, prophetically inclined and the numinous. This creates a tension of sorts, as iconic symbols are implemented to question, and seek into narratives that flow within contemporary perception.

Visionary art, the Erotic, Symbolism, and esoteric explorations are fundamentally vital to how I conceptualize most of the work that I create.

Not all my work has been photographed. There is one from 2008 in particular (The Watchtower); and copious amounts of drawings from years of work when I was a child that have not been documented professionally.

Right now:

Working again. Have not been active in 12 years. Will complete a series of 5 large pieces which are largely symbolic in nature. They are also the largest I have ever worked. I usually work quite large. More recently, I had a very fluid set of images which has produced these ideas, which are now being made. I am quite grateful for this inspiration, and am applying myself accordingly with great respect for it. I know it is unprecedented and powerful.
Artists I like
Symbolist artists & the Erotic; André Durand; Anselm Kiefer; Bansky; Félix González-Torres; Damien Hirst; Marc Quinn; Bruce Nauman; Jenny Saville; Albert Oehlen; Andy Goldsworthy; Janet Cardiff; Tacey Emin; Chris Ofili; H. R. Giger;Kris Martin; Marc Seguin; Rick Leong;Tom Hobkins....and so many more to name!
Interests
Music, reading, walking & pondering, socializing; going to art openings.
Centre of the artworld:
New York, London, Berlin

I never realized I was so tired...until my vacation started last week....

This back pain (since Sunday) has been draining. At least I did my Q.I edit & submitted it. I honestly didn't know how tired I was until I went on 'vacation'....missing my Muse & his energy. Looking fwd to seeing Herr Muse again, I hope on my evening shifts: Monday, Tuesday & Friday. I can only wish he'd also be there that Halloween weekend that I'm doing 4 straight...alas nice in theory. The more Herr Muse is near me, everything simply flows better on all levels. See More

Interpretations

I have discovered that when I dream about being back at school, combined with military cadets...it probably is indicative of the need to for me to get to work on an important project. Thus, today I have been finally working on my Quality Protocol Project. Re-reading my notes & recommended literature. Getting my mind in focus to produce what is necessary to achieve my goals.

Clairification

Clarification: is it not you that I worship. It is the inspiration that you provoke, that you set free. That is your true power.
