If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
I am...
I have listened to the countless stories of Barlig, my hometown, as narrated by our village elders; and now I struggle to preserve these through my works and I know I will have to devote my entire life to this task.

I paint as my ancestors have built the rice terraces—stone by stone, piece by piece. My ancestors painstakingly crafted a grand cultural monument. Now I wish to do the same through my art.
About my artwork
Jef Cawaon Cablog, an indigenous young artist from the mountainous region of Northern Philippines, believes in charting his future as a painter by turning to his past. Although he initially sought an artist’s education within a modern university, he promptly quit school when he felt that its instruction meddled with his traditional vision.

Cablog draws inspiration and energy from the mountains of his hometown Barlig, and it is where he chooses to paint. His art speaks of the Barlig of old, stories and dreams handed down from the elders and translated into magical images on canvas. His paintings overflow with details, some apparent, others you only discover after generous amounts of observation.

Cablog’s paintings show aspects of his culture in non-literal form, leaving a distinctive mark. Though other painters have started to imitate his style, the resulting copies are noticeably bereft of soul. Only Cablog can paint the way his ancestors constructed rice terraces—stone by stone, piece by piece.
