I am...
“My name is Duša (which in translation refers to soul) and incidentally I connect a large portion of my existence to the meaning of soul. To me soul is important, is inconceivable, weightless, cannot die, doesn't crease or mould, and doesn’t get moth-eaten - at least not by those real ones. Soul I believe belongs to unearthly extensions; as caretaker of my own soul I try to get well along with it. Sometimes I even »prey for it - and I wish it a heavenly happiness in – haven'. I often think to myself: 'I'd sell my soul to be able to express all I think – that I think, all that I feel all my moods… so that I can get to the heart of the soul and - paint it. But of course, my soul is priceless, is not for sale, does not change according to daily changes of currency value and can not be the matter of stock exchange. Soul is my name and soul is me – Dusha. I repeat the well known mantra - about a rainbowy mixture of - foolishness and pain, I agree with it and I sign it up as Duš(sh)a J(Y)esih.”
Duša Jesih, painter, Ljubljana, may 2006, Slovenia, Europe

I was born on1977 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I live and work in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. In 1996 I finished high school of Art, Design and Photography in Ljubljana and in 2003 graduated from Fine Arts on Art house - College for Visual Art, Ljubljana. In 2006 I post graduated in painting. For the present I live and work little here, little there, in Ljubljana and in village Kal near Pivka, in capital and in the countryside, engaged in painting and printmaking; from classic painting to new media (as a technical support to my work). I participated in numerous exhibitions, colonies, residence programs and projects at home and abroad. I’m a member of Community association of Slovenian artists ZDSLU. I’m also a mentor on Slovenian university for third life period.
About my artwork
“Shape and deformation of shape, gestures, colour and rhythm, that gives forth to my works I don’t try to explain in terms of globalisation, not even as a break with fine art tradition but mostly as an expression of my own inner translation of all that I receipt and that touches me. My main concept is not a naive tendency to change the world but rather an attempt to upgrade my inner development, which pushes on both – my creations, based on emotional level and also the level of my individual searches that are not excluded from the context of social development.”
Duša Jesih, Ljubljana 2003

By paintings of Duša Jesih we meet with a methodical deconstruction of painting field, which has no more function of a projection screen on which we could see a reflection of minimized model of present reality. This painting is wired to autonomic territory of color and tonal entity perception, controlingly established with a mixture of authors' imagination and care for propositions of compositional articulation that is a priori defined with the fact of two dimensions that are chosen for a ground and with dimensions of canvas... Painter divides the surface with linear construction to nonsymmetrical segment (basically geometrically shaped), but from there she does not follow the path of rationalistic poetics on which base opartistic and neogeometrical trends. She intervenes by separating parts with layers of paint so that the rhythm of her movements is recognizable as an intimate writing - with (for her) typical accents, cadences of intensity with more or less expressed gaps. The chosen color palette is tranquil, without out-jumping contrasts and complementary juxtapositions. Therefore separate painted parts affect together compound, as if they were well sorted out sentences of one musical composition. As I said already, form in her paintings is shaped with primarily defined division of surface and it seems that Mrs. Jesih focuses all her interest to expressive suggestibility of colors. They give us – without rhetorical bravery - a hint of states, feelings, and moods with different registers of feelings - authentic emotional and reasonable reactions to psychophysical reality. These responses are materialized in the structure of colored surface – as most exposed syntactic elements from the inside of her carefully chosen painting vocabulary. That also aloud articulation of refined statements without metaphor or (and) linear double meanings. Hesitating lyrism of these paintings addresses us with its simple ephemeral whisper; it doesn’t search for »big existential story« but focuses to an instant state of subjects' perception on things and events which many too often miss to register or register it only as non important details.
