If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Digital, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture
I am...
...a digital artist of sorts. Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1981, I left school with six GCSE's two of which were in Art and Design Technology. I then went on to complete a ND in Graphic Design then moved on to BA Hons in Graphic Design and Printing along with Computer Applications in Art and Design. I graduated in 2002. I have worked as a Graphic Designer creating logos, flyers and various media elements for local companies, then moved on to freelance work, designing corporate identity, logo's etc. for clients worldwide. Since then I have been commissioned to design a themed stained glass window for a local wine bar, a summer house ceiling painting and a large canvas print for a local establishment among others.
About my artwork
Inspiration for my digital art comes from my fascination with the Japanese culture. My creative process begins with a drawing as sketching allows me to visualize and imagine the completed work. My creations are heavily influenced by manga and especially by some of the artists of the Superflat movement. These images can be transfered to almost anything with a printable surface.

I have an interest in fine art and I am primarily inspired by animals, although I do enjoy sketching human faces. I use graphite pencil charcoal, colured pencils, watercolours and gouache for my portraiture, most of which are derived from photographs. I am self taught and strive for realism in each piece, taking great care to capture every fine detail. Portraiture has always been a rewarding challenge due to the vast features and unique personalities faces present. I am often commissioned to draw loved ones, celebrities and pets.
Artists I like
My creations are heavily influenced by manga and especially by some of the artists of the Superflat movement.I am also intrigued by the wood block artists of 17th Japan and pictures of the floating world (ukiyo-e ). Katsushika Hokusai, Hishikawa Moronobu and Kitagawa Utamaro (woodblock), Koga Harue, Yumiko Kayukawa (surrealism) and more modern artists such as Chiho Aoshima, Makoto Muramatsu, Yoshitomo Nara and Akira Toriyama (digital art/manga). I adore the evanescent, impermanent, fleeting beauty and simplicity of this style, I try to recreate the intensity and colours used in these pictures in my own artwork.
I love all things Japanese; Sushi, horror films, manga, origami, martial arts, culture, history, fashion and language to name just a few! I've been studying Japanese language and kanji for about 7 years now (mada mada desu yo!) I also make Steampunk/Neo - Victorian jewellery and sculptures from old clock and watch parts. I enjoy illustration both traditional and digital, graphic design, tattoo design (I translate English names etc. into Kanji for tattoos) and I also make handmade greetings cards. I listen to all sorts of music (mainly rock/metal) and I practice yoga and pilates, I enjoy cycling, reading (mainly books by Japanese authors for a book club I'm in) computer games - X-box - Playstation - Dreamcast (Shenmue is still a favourite), singing, learning Russian, watching movies and playing the bass guitar
