Joel-Peter Witkin is an Albuquerque (New Mexico, USA) photographer. I have seen many of his photos at various venues here and in Santa Fe. They are compelling and abhorrent and too much, but if museumification is any measure of artistic success, he is undoubtedly an important figure in contemporary art. For me as an artist “too much” is where I feel I ought to work, but finding the location of that wild state is and always has been an unexpected problem. Where is it? Is it on a Google map? Are there street views? Is the frontier marked by a fence or wall? Are there billboards that announce “Leaving the Territory of Enough. Last Gas,” “Only 10 Kilometers to Too Much”? Am I just too afraid to look for it?
