Daniel Bejar is a multi-disciplinary visual artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He is
a 2007 MFA sculpture recipient from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and
received his BFA from Ringling College of Art & Design, Sarasota, FL. In 2008 he
participated in the Artist in the Marketplace program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. His
recent exhibitions include "How Soon is Now?" AIM 28, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx,NY
/ "The World is a Handkerchief", Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs, Long Island City, NY /
CAA New York area MFA exhibition, New York, NY / The 2006 Peekskill Project, Peekskill,
NY / Temporary Cities - Russia, National Centre for Contemporary Arts NCCA, Moscow,
Russia / Smoke and Mirrors: Photography and Performance, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.
He is also the recipient of a Graduate Student Research and Creative Project Grant from the
Graduate School at the State University of New York at New Paltz.
About my artwork
My work explores the traces and memories societies leave behind, particularly looking to the
origins of social memories that dictate historical record. Engaging the origins of memories, I
question how they have evolved or devolved over time. I transform familiar images, symbols
and languages found in popular culture to suggest alternate interpretations in a metaphorical
Through sculpture, video and photography my practice initiates the construction of conventional
symbols or icons from materials embedded with history, culture or politics like the American
Flag in the “Betsy Ross Trilogy” or the key to my apartment in “The Visual Topography of a
Generation Gap”. By unraveling the layers of history, alternative possibilities and understandings
of our adopted memories, histories and identities are illuminated, providing a space for
