I am...
a fine art photographer who has been based in Perth, Western Australia since 2002. Born in New Zealand and lived in Köln, Germany for close to 6 years.
About my artwork
Images are, for me, inherently loaded with stories. When I see a broken door or a crumpled piece of paper I interpret these further than simple objective observation. 'Why' and 'how' are impossible to ignore. Using very limited information and my emotional response I 'fill' in the gaps and create myths.

I am interested in what or who is not there, what I can't quite see and the helplessness of not being able to 'ground' an image in a time line.

If something moves the viewer or I is it something more than social conditioning? Is there an innate aspect involved? Is there a transference that occurs when darkness and danger are implied?

What preconceptions do the viewer and I bring to the experience? How does scarcity, complexity and proximity in both content and composition inform this process?

Christopher Young's Blog

five @ the Perth Centre for Photography

I've got a show opening on July 9 at the Perth Centre for Photography in... Perth, Australia. An exhibition preview is up on my website and, for those perverse souls who want to track it's evolution, I've tagged my blog so all relevant posts are together.

How to look at an artwork - particularly photographs?

As a bit of a followup to How to look at art...

That which is imaged exists on more than one plane.

To fully appreciate what you are looking at, you need to be aware that there are multiple threads to that which you are consuming.

First off, the image itself is on a surface(s) and that surface is an object in itself. It is a tactile thing that you can… Continue

Tools, Tricks and other 'T' words

I'm a firm believer that tools a means to an end just as a collection of sounds that 'might' form words are only elements in a sentence.

I've been asked twice in the last few days something to the effect of if money were no object, what would you use as 'gear' for making images. Similarily, I was asked my opinion on this camera vs that.

I - of course - have tools that I'm comfortable with but don't see them as particularly relevant to process. Whether… Continue

Gallery Protocol

This has been floating around my head for such a long time that it needs to be written.

It is an intensely frustrating process for someone like myself to engage with the art gallery community. This feeling of helplessness as to what/who/where/when/how is enough to make me scream. The introversion doesn't help either... if I was bombastic I might be able to bluff my way in or at least establish relationships that form cornerstones for something else but as it is,… Continue

Hello Christopher
I really like your work - it's compelling and loaded with gravitas and a sense of isolation, longing, sadness... would that be right?
If you've got the time, please take a look at my image blog: http://seanmcgarry.blogspot.com/
Thanks, Sean

I read your Blog "Gallery Protocol" and it is sadly very familar to me.
Your work is very geometric and has a subliminal relationship with itself.

Hello Christopher,
Very professional work. I was especially drawn to your portraits and the pictures dealing with decay or the aftermath of some destructive force, like fire (I love "What I Am #30").
Best regards
Manfred

Hi Christopher,

I'm really enjoying your work. We share some of the same pre-occupations, but our takes on them are (thankfully) different. Good stuff!

Graham.
