I am...
Antria Pelekanou is a recent MA Fine Art graduate of the University of East London. After curating contemporary art exhibitions at The Lloyd Gill Gallery in Weston-Super-Mare in 2009, Antria moved on to realise her ambition of devising an itinerant art show – A Moving Exhibition. The project displayed the work of 70 contemporary artists across six London galleries, from March to June 2010.
About my artwork
Tree Of Frogs by Antria Pelekanou has a great use of colour, style and techniques - more interesting than whatever the piece may be trying to convey." - Fringe Report

Pelekanou’s work explores themes and subjects such as sexuality, stylisation as well as looking at the kitsch element. Her work is focused upon the obsession to portray the texture and shape of the original imagery, which she finds from newspapers, magazines as well as taking her own staged photographs.

While she is using a large scale canvas, and painting the main figure with a tiny brush, the viewer can see the obsession Pelekanou has with detail, while some parts of her paintings are left painted in a quirky way. This directs the viewer to the painting’s subject matter.

Every painting is composed by several images put together to create one image. This draws questions to the narrative within the work. Suggestion and innuendoes are strong elements in Pelekanou’s work as this allows the work to become less illustrational and more fictional.

As a figurative painter she explores the term “figurative” in her work. Some of her paintings do not include a human figure so instead the figure becomes the tree, or the frogs, spider or the grass.
