Nicola Adams became the first female boxer to win an Olympic gold medal. She broke a vertebra in in 2009; the year women's boxing was allowed into the Olympics. Adams was bed-ridden for three months. Adams also had to fight the prejudice she has faced first as a female boxer, and then as a boxer of Afro-Caribbean heritage. “There’s Black Now In the Union Jack” declared the journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown while reviewing the Olympic success of Britons from Afro-Caribbean heritage. Adams is now a role model on many levels.
