His father died in an accident before his birth, and when his mother was kidnapped by slave raiders the baby, Carver, was returned to the plantation he was born on. Carver grew to be a notable scholar, despite the illness. He had an international reputation in research, teaching and nature. Dr. Carver's work resulted in the patents for 325 products from peanuts, more than 100 products from sweet potatoes and hundreds more from a dozen other plants. He was one of only 100 nominees for "The Greatest American" award.
