What features make a work of art date and what features, if any, help a work resist this process of cultural ageing. Could we curate a exhibition of dated contemporary art? What works would you nominate?

Example of something not "classic", the surface is made of iron grid, the butterflies are from ceramic and they all are captured inside the net ,
something "new"(I think)

"what makes a particular technque 'classic' and another one 'new'?"
Repetition Rob, or the lack of it. Surely, nothing more....?

Yes. But what makes a particular technque 'classic' and another one 'new'?

'Classic' techniqes can a quick way to make a work 'not contemporary'.

- works that are made in new technique, not classic, installation ,for example

I think this discussion might like one of those indoor cycle races where everyone starts of very slowly...to see if I can speed things up let me suggest the following:

Datedness is an intrinsic part of our culture. Products of various kinds might be perfectly serviceable but pass their symbolic sell-by date. Works of art are in general no different from other products in this respect.

Two key features that help date works are derivativeness and dependence on the novelty and prestige of technology.

That might count as research at Nottingham Trent University but nowhere else...
