"La Puissance de l'Histoire"
Really good post just below. Informative, insightful and well written. Thanks Lee Allane.
Perhaps the most subtle and insiduous form of censorship is 'criteria' used by public funding bodies in assessing who does and doesn't receive public funding, exposure or support.
In the United Kingdom, for example, the Arts Council (the major public funding body) has a rigid set of criteria that dictate not only the subject matter, style and scale of the work, but also frequently the way in which the artist must approach the production and presentation of the work.
Simply producing good quality work is not enough - the artist must conform to the approved 'orthodoxy' of the funding body and more often than not this also means setting the work within the context of an unnecessarily cerebral (and frequently pretenscious) 'concept' that the funding body approves - which often includes some educational or public participation element that has little or nothing to do with art.
The result is that many artists are faced with the choice of either producing work that conforms to the funding body's requirements or accept that they will continue to find themselves excluded from any form of financial support or the opportunity to show their work in publically funded galleries.
The result of this subtle censorship is that we are moving rapidly towards a form of 'art by bureaucrat' in which the State controls the type of art that the public is encouraged (or allowed) to see. This is the modern capitalist approach to censorship - don't shoot them or throw them in gaol, just ignore them and let poverty and disillusion do the rest..
In some ways this form of censorship is more difficult to combat that the more blatent forms of creative repression. At least there was something noble and romantic about being sent to a Gulag for refusing to conform to Stalin's Socialist Realism, but it's hard to find anything vaguely noble or romantic about apathy and neglect.
Perhaps Elliot was right.. this is the way that the art will eventaully go... not with a bang but with a whimper... with a pretension of polically correct bureaucrats telling us that what we are allowed to see is the pinnacle of human creativity.... and Tracey Emin on TV....
