September 15 - Deadline for 2014 Residencies
The Residency Program provides space and time for artists (visual artists, writers, musicians, performance artists) to create art in a unique and supportive environment. Elsewhere consists of artistically crafted living and studio spaces. Time spans are individually based - 1 to 6 months. The residencies are partially subsidized. The cost to the artist is between $500 and $600 per month (see below), utilities and WiFi included. (Our cost is $2000/month per artist). Please inquire about additional scholarships.
Elsewhere is a ‘choose your own adventure’! Situated in ‘down town’ Paonia, the spaces are versatile, providing residents with opportunities to connect and interact with other artists in the community, to create or participate in art exhibitions, and to teach classes or workshops.
The rooms are not wheelchair accessible. We do not have a washer or dryer at the moment. There is a local laundromat four blocks from the house. Residents are responsible for their own meals. The fully equipped kitchen is shared by all residents. Grocery store, banks , library, theater, pubs, post office, etc. are easy walking distance from Elsewhere. Elsewhere also has bicycles available for residents' use.
Full disclosure: We are across the alley from the local bar. It can sometimes be loud on a summer night. We have never had complaints from folks who live here, but want to be up front about it. The Residency Manager will speak with the bar owner on these occasions.
River Park Artist Resident Opportunity
Elsewhere Studios and the Western Slope Conservation Center are seeking an artist to spend 1 to 2 months installing art on the Paonia River Park fence in June & July of 2014. The River Park is located next to a large concrete yard that is a real eye-sore. An 84 foot long chain link fence in the parking lot fails to hide the large piles of gravel and industrial equipment behind it. A public art installation is needed to embellish the fence and make this border of the park a more pleasant view for visitors. The River Park Residents' Fee at Elsewhere will be funded by the Conservation Center and they will be given a $500/month stipend to pay for relocation to Paonia and for general living expenses. Funding for project materials must be requested in the budget section of the application and will be secured through the conservation Center's fundraising efforts.
Application deadline is September 15th.
For more detailed information about this opportunity, the application process, and for the application itself, please go here.
The shared studio on the Main Floor is approximately 360 sq ft with high ceilings. It has a sink, track lighting, and a loft with library. The Suite (top floor) has its own studio space. A ceramic studio is part of the Residency Manager's living space (basement of Elsewhere) and can be made available for resident artist use. There is a small woodworking shop with table saw, chop saw, and a variety of power and hand tools available for artist use. There are performing art spaces available in Paonia that can be contracted for dance and theater.
All rooms and spaces in the main house have radiant in-floor heat. There is also a large wood stove in living room of house as a supplemental heat/cooking system.
