Context

The workshop is based on four propositions / questions:

1 Today environmental conflicts have come to occupy an on-going place within public debates. How do we translate the concept of sustainability into design practice?

2 If cities and buildings are central in the human environmental future. How can urban and architectural design practices help to mitigate the negative effects of humans on the environment?

3 The practices of urban design and architecture bring together a vast set of heterogeneous elements: diverse actors, technology, science, politics, materiality, and diverse spatial scales and timeframes. Which role do images (and diagrams) play in these practices as tools of communication and decision making processes?

4 If aesthetics is understood as a theory of perception, in the deployment of images (and diagrams) what do design collectives perceive and what do they as subject-matter of accepted perception thematise (what do they in this process miss out)? Objectives The workshop aims to break with the ease with which we bring forward our interpretations of both the concept of sustainability and of images in the context of urban and architectural design practices. The aim is to develop a set of questions and tools that address the aesthetics of images deployed in these practices. Further, the aim is to engage ourselves in image-making, hopefully these images may modify, perturb, intervene into spatial practices and introduce novel ways of envisioning and composing spaces.
