Event Description

Since its founding in 2007 OSTRALE as an exhibition for contemporary arts has committed itself to supporting innovation and to representing current contemporary artistic ideas. So, every year approx. 160 artists from meanwhile over 30 countries present the wide range of contemporary fine arts at varying locations of the historic Hans Erlwein slaughterhouse area with 15,000 sqm inside and 25,000 sqm outside. Compared to the first year with 4,000 visitors there were already 17,500 visitors in 2012.

In its seventh year OSTRALE is searching for some new approaches: In addition to the established concept of curatorially defined, interdisciplinary presentation of artworks in the Heuböden (haylofts), in 2013 also in hall no. 4 of Messe Dresden (Dresden fair grounds) and selected external venues in the city centre there is the innovation of providing 8 ground spaces of the Futterställe (former stables) for special art projects.

2013 TOPIC:

OSTRALE´013 – Wir überschreiten den Rubikon / We cross the Rubicon

In the seventh year of OSTRALE we have decided to critically review our position and still trust in developments that have approved. Under the motto "We cross the Rubicon" we initialize an exhibition cycle that will deal with the East issue from different points of view beginning in 2014.

In the prologue in 2013 it is necessary to examine ourselves and at the same time, to become aware of how we are seen by others.

Where do we locate ourselves and how do others locate us. Not only this question of status quo, but also the question of change, its direction of impact and its intensity are in the focus of interest.

As well, challenging supposedly established perspectives contains great potential to be exhausted.
Where are topographic, physical, linguistic, mental and aesthetic boundaries and limitations and how are they broken down? How much power does art have and which are the means art uses to overcome and even change these boundaries and limitations.
