Open Systems is pleased to present the JOURNAL - Issue 4, Autumn 2013, in which the guest editor Andrei Siclodi tackles inherently significant questions on continual processes of the “commodification of artistic practices as a characteristic phenomenon of present-day cognitive capitalism.”
The project curator Federica Bueti addresses in ARTSLAB 4, Autumn 2013, the delimitation of knowledge and the production of discourses situated in an engagement with storytelling and writing towards how meaning is produced and stories constructed in partaking in them.
JOURNAL, Issue 4, Autumn
Guest editor: Andrei Siclodi
Title: Out of the Commodity!
This issue of Open Systems is critically concerned with the advancing commodification of artistic practices as a characteristic phenomenon of present-day cognitive capitalism. Unlike the classical production system of art, in which artists fulfill a function as producers or authors of artworks, in cognitive capitalism the practice itself, and so the entirety of the activities and conditions that are generated by the artistic subject and result in the art production, becomes an exploitable resource.

Project curator: Federica Bueti
Title of the exhibition: A Word on a Tree Like a Body as a Thing
A Word on a Tree Like a Body as a Thing curated by Federica Bueti looks at storytelling and writing, the use of knowledge and the production of discourses in current artistic practices. Artists are storytellers, but of another kind. They explore the possibilities of using language, written and spoken, as the material and site on which to build a new grammar of relationship, to grapple with the materiality of signs, sample narratives and unsettle conventions of how meaning is made and stories are told.
Participating artists: Kaya Behkalam, Olivia Dunbar, Sarah Forrest, Mariam Ghani, Rana Hamadeh, Jillian Mayer, Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere, Anne Waldman
