Event Description

31.10.2013 - 02.11.2013

Lectures, Conversations, Performances, Films, Workshop

Ten years after the death of Edward Said, an international symposium examines his academic legacy in the light of the recent processes of transformation in the Arab World.

Edward Said left his mark on the discourse about relations between East and West like no other Arab thinker. Said’s most influential book, “Orientalism” (1978) is considered a founding document of a new and independent branch of the cultural sciences, postcolonial studies. Edward Said’s stellar academic career in Princeton, Harvard, followed by Columbia University also combined acute criticism of the Arab regimes of his time and a decidedly secular vision of democracy.

Said himself did not live to see the “Arab Spring” but his work offers many approaches to examining the changes in the Arab World and the contemporary and future challenges that go with them. At the three-day symposium, participants from the Arab World, the US, Latin America and Asia will explore how his work can be developed further in the current context.

Among those offering international perspectives are political scientists such as Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou Rahme, Ahl al Kahf, Mohammad al Attar, Rana Barakat, Asef Bayat, Akeel Bilgrami, Subhi Hadidi, Sandi Hilal & Alessandro Petti, Abdelfattah Kilito, Elias Khoury (tbc), Samia Mehrez, W.T.M. Mitchell, Prabhat Patnaik, James Quandt, Adania Shibli, Michael Steinberg, Fawwaz Traboulsi, Trinh Minh-ha, Michael Wood.

Lectures, conversations, performances, films and workshops will offer insights into the artistic debates about the processes of transformation in the Arab World. A “young forum” will bring together young players from civil society, culture and academia from Arab countries along with renowned cultural figures and academics to sound out experimental approaches in the spirit of Edward Said.
