David Hepher, who is known for his architecturally inspired paintings of suburban terraces and inner city tower blocks, has always thought of himself as a landscape painter, the city being his landscape. Over the years, during summers spent in South West France, he has painted the landscape he finds himself in down there, bringing to it much the same approach that he uses in South East London, incorporating the material qualities of the subject such as concrete and, in the country, earth. By showing the French paintings alongside his urban works, he hopes the very different nature of the subject matter will also manifest similarities of attitude and approach.
