The Artes Mundi international exhibition and prize identifies and supports contemporary visual artists whose work engages with social reality, lived experience and the human condition.  Artes Mundi accepts nominations from across the world for artists of any age, who are established in their own country or region and on the way to developing a high profile international career.

All nominations are reviewed by two independent, internationally recognised curators who will shortlist between five to seven artists to take part in the biennial exhibition in 2014. One of the artists will received the prize of £40,000, with all other shortlisted artists receiving £2,000 each. Adam Budak, Independent Curator and Sabine Schaschl, Director and Curator at Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich will select the shortlist for Artes Mundi 6.

Artes Mundi is an internationally focused arts organisation that identifies, recognises and supports contemporary visual artists who engage with the human condition, social reality and lived experience.

Artes Mundi is Latin for ‘arts of the world’, reflecting the international focus of this Wales-based arts charity whose mission is:

"To present a landmark programme of international, contemporary visual art that will enrich the cultural and educational life of Wales and its people, develop and inspire new audiences and build cultural bridges between Wales and the wider world".

Founded in 2002 by Welsh artist William Wilkins, Artes Mundi is best known for its biennial international Exhibition and Prize which takes place in Cardiff. The exhibition is Wales’ biggest and most exciting contemporary visual art show. One of the shortlisted artists is awarded the prize of £40,000, the largest art prize in the UK and one of the most significant in the world.

Artes Mundi is a registered charity (registered number 1097377).  Its trustees are widely respected figures from business, the visual arts community and the wider cultural sector.
